CDK Global Party for National Automotive Dealers Association Conference

Exploratorium, San Francisco, CA

Background & Challenge:

Support the design, planning, & production for Curiosity Catering, the in house caterer for THE EXPLORATORIUM in San Francisco for a spin off event from the National Auto Dealers Association conference. Curiosity wanted to focus on executing excellent cuisine for CDK Global’s appreciation event, that draws 1,000 attendees every year.  The event had already been sold, and Curiosity wanted support with DESIGN that would knock attendees socks off.

Result:

A Stunning GREEN CARPET affair. The design process took us outside the box, sourcing odd items and props from the San Francisco Prop Co-op, making the event fun and FUNKY, hip and ironic – like San Francisco itself.  Guests were greeted by a pair of pretty cool ROBOTS, interacting with them as they made their way to the main event. The San Francisco twist was carried through from the “Accordioni” player a la Beetlejuice, to the ceviche station donning live crab.  There were authentic copper divers helmets, dessert buffets making GEOMETRIC patterns, antipasti in buffets made from old crates and grass, and frito pies were served hobo style from reclaimed pallet bars adorned with luggage and themoses that even “THE JERK” would envy. Our teams worked flawlessly together, from planning to set up, through execution. Curiosity was able to shine the light on their fantastic, thoughtful, delicious cuisine.

Sequoia Hospital New Pavilion Grand Opening

Redwood City, CA

Background & Challenge:

Design, plan, and execute a ONCE IN A LIFETIME series of events for Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital New Pavilion Opening, over FOUR DAYS with 7 celebrations, each with their own unique details and exacting care given to every aspect. The entire series was EIGHTEEN MONTHS in the making, 12 DAYS IN PRODUCTION start to finish on site, on top of a parking garage, with construction delays and an intense heat wave.

Result:

Pulled out all the stops! The challenge of taking a unique design and setting for the GALA on DAY 3, Saturday night, and backing out 3 other days. Each day had its own specific GOALS and VISION, such as DAY 1 with Major Donor Tours, that took place over four floors in ten hours with 40 individual groups. In opening a new facility on the site of an existing one, we were challenged to help the hospital insure that the PHYSICIANS, MEDICAL STAFF, and EMPLOYEES felt appreciated on DAY 2, which we did all in conjunction with the RIBBON CUTTING ceremony & a luncheon for dignitaries. The final challenge we were giving by Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital was to take the bones of the GALA, and on DAY 4, TRANSFORM it into a community appreciation HEALTH FAIR that would forever raise the bar and break the mold for health fairs in the future. The beauty is captured in this amazing video.

Out of This World

Red Bull Studios, New York, NY

Background & Challenge:

Help plan and design an uber creative collaboration between United Purpose and Planetary Collective. This was set to be a first-of-its-kind event in New York City’s Red Bull Studios and drive awareness for United Purpose and Planetary Collective, featuring a film screening, discussion and after-party. The charge was to help pull together an inspirational, sophisticated event with virtually no budget, in just 5 weeks.

Result:

Busted our butts and drained our brains to help pull off a $60K style event for a 10th of the price in record time. Along with Neon Butterfly and UP we designed a film-screening, purpose inspiring event experience and show flow for a stellar speaker panel that included Director Guy Reid, Astronauts Mike Massimino and Ron Garan, Zen Priestess Angel Kyodo Williams and Buckminster Fuller Institute Director Elizabeth Thompson. Red Bull and everyone in attendance were taken out of their world on an unforgettable journey with an exclusive, high-end, game-changing feel.

Unmasked Gala

San Francisco, CA

Background & Challenge:

Create an annual fundraising event for the San Francisco GLBT Historical Society. The event had a limited budget and was lacking a central theme.

Result:

After speaking with the Historical Society we learned that as recently as the 1970’s Halloween was the only time homosexuals could be open about their identity. So we thought, since this event is scheduled for October, why not combine GLBT history and the Historical Society’s mission into an incredible event with a positive message? And we did. We flipped the “mask” on its head and made it a badge of honor and the idea behind a wildly successful event that exceeded fundraising goals. The concept remains the driving force behind the fundraiser five years later.

Cirque du Sequoia

Sequoia Wine Auction for the Sequoia Hospital Foundation, Atherton, CA.

Background & Challenge:

Produce a legendary event worthy of the Sequoia Hospital Foundation’s annual wine auction fundraiser. Having worked with the Foundation for a number of years, they trusted us with both the event and with managing food and beverage donations.

Result:

Created a vintage circus-themed auction in a breathtaking garden setting with twelve restaurants and caterers, twelve wineries and specialty beverage donors. The party was so enchanting that guests stayed 45 minutes longer than scheduled and kept on giving! We also succeeded in bringing four new cuisine & beverage donors into the fold.

ISES NYC Sustainability Summit

New York, New York

Background & Challenge:

Lead the production of New York City’s first sustainability-focused event industry summit and introduce our colleagues to the sustainability standards and how to implement them. This summit was the first of its kind in New York City, set up to inspire event industry thought-leaders to communicate and collaborate in innovative ways, without passing out pamphlets and other wasteful material.

Result:

Facilitated a unique design format that allowed for more meaningful, inspiring conversation between vendors and attendees. Instead of the typical setup where each vendor stands alone behind a table, separate from each other and everyone else, we grouped vendors together by service. The energy and excitement at the summit was so strong it was palpable. The event featured keynote speakers from Bloomberg LP, Rainforest Alliance, Jimmy’s 43, and New Amsterdam Market.

Taste,

by Root Division San Francisco, CA

Background & Challenge:

Demonstrate the value of event planning services to Root Division, a cool, fledgling non-profit art organization. We were brought in to plan an event called Taste, where Root Divisions brings in hot, local restaurants, combining art and food.

Result:

We helped everyone at Root Division do what they do best and thus Taste was a huge success. We relieved the staff of time-sucking logistics so they could focus on sponsor acquisitions and donations. We streamlined production so Root Division could be the host at their event. While Twirl managed every professional detail the Executive Director was able to do her job effectively and be a guest at her own party. She later told us that she enjoyed Taste like never before and had been able to give supporters the attention they deserve.

Industry Leadership

Certificate In Sustainable Event Planning

Background & Challenge:

After the success of implementing education for the ASTM Sustainable Event Standards, GMIC approached us with an industry changing concept: Create a 360 degree learning environment to create the next class of sustainable event leaders so  we did. The students are working towards creating, guiding and implementing the sustainability goals and performance outcomes of the 2014 Sustainable Meeting Conference. The students are learning how to create a green conference while working on a green conference whose mission is to educate professionals on how to create green conferences. It’s wicked meta.

Result:

We are leading 20 event professionals through the process of planning a sustainable conference, curating lively discussions, evaluating event services based on sustainability versus price, and inviting conference vendors to present directly to the students. The hope is that this program becomes the model for an industry-wide sustainable event planning certification – now wouldn’t that be bad-ass?

Green Venue Report

Background & Challenge:

In collaboration with Greenview Advisors, we’ve collected data from the top 20 events centers in North America to determine whether the event industry really is the 2nd most wasteful on the continent. This new to the world study will help us understand the current baseline; improvements the multi-billion dollar events industry has made and has yet to make.

Result:

Our goal is to create an unprecedented assessment on the state of sustainability for events, conferences, meetings and tradeshows in North America. No one has ever collected this data before and we are thrilled to be part of such a revolutionary study that is greatly needed and has potential to inspire massive change. The collaborative partnership with Greenview Advisors also celebrates a new model of working with competitors instead of against them.
